Informing for Service and Leadership

1.A FACULTY SEMINARS: ‘THE CALLING OF THE PROFESSIONS’

Sponsor: Center for Catholic Studies
Partner: The Center for Vocation and Servant Leadership
Description: This initiative will include a four-day seminar for faculty members. Beginning with a faculty seminar in June of 2003 on ‘The Call of Literature,’ The Center for Vocation and Servant Leadership together with the Center for Catholic Studies will sponsor faculty seminars on the relationship of the disciplines and professions to the notion of vocation and calling. The seminars will be planned with the help of faculty members from the particular disciplines and professions. Participating faculty will write a short essay or article on a topic relating to the seminar. These essays will be collected and made available for wider dissemination.

1.B CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES ON VOCATION AND SERVANT LEADERSHIP

Sponsor: The Center for Vocation and Servant Leadership
Partners: Center for Catholic Studies, University Faculty Senate, Committee of Faculty and Deans
Description: This initiative will transform existing courses or develop new ones, infusing into them the theological perspective of vocation. While the primary focus is on the undergraduate student population, graduate courses will be included in this process. Faculty, along with an administrator from Student Affairs, will respond to a call for proposals developed by a joint review board comprised of representatives from the Faculty Senate and the Lilly Steering Committee. This board will draft the request for proposals (RFP) in consultation with representatives from the various colleges’ Educational Policy Committees. As the request for proposals is developed, town meetings will vet the ideas and inform the University community. This process will result in a request for proposals that is developed through a consensus process.

A web resource will also be created for faculty and students who are interested in both course development and research. Faculty and students alike could post reference material that will also be available to the public. The website that will be used for this purpose is already a domain licensed to the University: www.thepastoraltreasury.org.

1.C SCHOLARSHIPS FOR VOCATION EXPLORATION

Sponsor: The Center for Vocation and Servant Leadership
Partners: Center for Catholic Studies, Committee of Faculty and Enrollment Services officers
Description: Scholarships will be offered for students, both undergraduate and graduate, to reflect upon vocation in the light of their faith commitments, and to continue their spirit of volunteerism without the pressure of working to pay for a private education. Criteria will include a commitment to the exploration of vocation as evidenced by a prior history of volunteerism. In addition, five of the ten scholarships will be awarded to students who are prepared to serve as music ministers, cantors or choir members at campus worship, as well as serve as a resource for churches in the surrounding neighborhoods. Applicants will be asked to write an essay explaining what servant leadership means to them as a vocation. While these awards are for one year, applicants may annually apply for consideration. These scholarships will be awarded each year at our Charter Day ceremony.

1.D VOCATION: A SETON PERSPECTIVE

Sponsor: The Center for Vocation and Servant Leadership
Partners: Seton Hall University Community of Faculty, Administrators, Students, Staff and Regents
Description: This initiative will provide support for any member of the University community who wishes to develop scholarly research aimed at promoting ministry and/or work as a spiritual vocation. The University will publish the proceedings of its work on the theological exploration of vocation by 2007.

The University will also provide a fund for ‘second wave’ ideas and proposals that will inevitably emerge from the fruits of this grant. Interested individuals will submit proposals to the Center for Vocation and Servant Leadership. A part-time grant writer will be available through the Center as a consultant to secure external, matching funds.
